The Barrel Inn, Bretton                                                                                 The bar - Barrel Inn
The Barrel Inn, Bretton, Near Eyam, Hope Valley, S32 5QD (01433 630856) dates back to 1597 and is the highest pub in Derbyshire, where from, on a clear day, you can see 5 counties.  This is a traditional country inn that you must visit if you want to stay in the Peak District.  This is what you expect from an old country inn, an oak-beamed bar, flagstones, studded doors in low doorways, and decorated with pictures and antiques. There are seats and tables to the front and a covered courtyard at the back, but, provided there is room, you really want to be inside.
They sell 3 real ales, the food is freshly prepared and of local origin, and there is even bed and breakfast provided, which you may wish to take them up on as the Barrel Inn is literally out in the Peak District.  If you require cheaper accommodation, there is even a Youth Hostel around the corner, but the Barrel Inn is somewhere I have returned to time and again to eat, drink, and rest, at the end of a long Peak District walk.
