Stork Hotel
It has been a while since I regularly visited Birkenhead, mainly because Tranmere are now in a different division, but it really is worth a visit just to drink at the Stork Hotel, 41-43 Price Street, CH41 6JN (0151 647 7506).
Before and/or after any match at Prenton Park, a visit to the delights of Liverpool is advised (yes, I have said “delights”, you really do need to visit to comprehend what a cracking city it is, see my Liverpool recommendations). However, as you will realise from these few paragraphs, you should also fit in the Stork Hotel, where I always meet up with long-standing Tranmere-supporting friends, it really is that friendly and an excellent place to visit.
The Stork is a grade II listed building that was built in 1840, with an interesting enough ceramic exterior, but with an interior to savour (I sound like I'm going over the top, but I really do like this place). There are floor to ceiling ceramic tiles, leaded stain glass, varnished woodwork and a mosaic floor. Oh yes, and 4+ cask conditioned ales and food is served as well, all wrapped up with a friendly welcome!
On walking through the doors I remember exactly what, apart from the introduction of keg beers, I dislike about the development of bars since the 1960s. They have more often than not had their character knocked out of them literally, together with the knocking down of their dividing walls. The Stork oozes character, with its nooks and crannies, a splendidly preserved interior and great ales, what are you waiting for? Jump on that Metro to Hamilton Square, cross over the square to the Stork, and I hope you wont be disappointed!
