The Goat & Tricycle                                                                         The Porterhouse

The following pubs' names were given to me by Bournemouth fans I met in Sheffield (many thanks) as being, not just great pubs serving good food and drink, but as friendly places to visit and enjoy. The first mentioned is The Goat & Tricycle, 27-29 Westhill Road, BH2 5PF (01202 314 220), the union of 2 neighbouring public houses, and now one comfortable pub, with flock wallpaper, dark wood furniture, a partially green tiled exterior and a heated patio beer garden.

The Goat and Tricycle serves 11 real ales from handpumps, including its regular 'Wadworth' beers, Bishops Tipple, Horizon, 6x, JCB and Henrys IPA, and 5 regularly changing guest ales. Food on offer includes standard fare, organic crusty baguettes, sausage and mash, burgers and steaks, fish and chips, ham, egg and chips, and goat curry! On Sundays a home made roast is available all afternoon, and a specials board advises variations to the standard menu throughout the week.

The second place I was advised of is The Porterhouse, 113 Poole Road, BH4 9BG (01202 768586), Ringwood Brewery's only pub in Bournemouth. This is a cosy pub with a bustling atmosphere, bare wood floorboards, oak panelling, hops decorating the bar, and a blue painted exterior. It sells Best, Fortyniner and Old Thumper from Ringwood, usually one regularly changing guest ale and Cheddar Valley cider. Good value food is served Monday to Saturday lunchtimes.
